School wins top award for physical education

PUPILS at Bruche Primary School, Warrington, have added to its long list of accolades with a prestigious award for the quality of its physical education.

The Association for Physical Education’s Quality Mark for Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity, with the highest distinction grade, was awarded after an in-depth look at every aspect of physical education at the school, which is part of Warrington Primary Academy Trust (WPAT).

Assessors said the school had an “outstanding” commitment to swimming, which included the use of School Swimming Foundation Awards and swimming passports to record children’s progress in the pool. They were also pleased to note that pupils did PE for more than the recommended two hours per week and that sport and physical activity were at the heart of school life.

Bruche has received several plaudits, including awards for the quality of its governance, education for pupils with special educational needs and the effectiveness of its teaching assistants. The school has also topped local performance tables for the children’s SATs results.

PE teacher James Cooney said: “I am absolutely delighted that our school has been recognised for the quality of its PE, school sport and physical activity. This award has highlighted the phenomenal effort we make to ensure that the highest possible provision is available for all our children. I am especially pleased that our swimming curriculum has been highlighted in our report.”
