Bruche Primary School, once one of the lowest performing in the country, has received a national award for being in the top 10 per cent of schools nationally for student attainment.
Bruche Primary School in Seymour Drive, Padgate, received the Educational Outcomes Award for exceptional pupil attainment, for the performance of its children in last year’s Key Stage 2 tests.
The award was made by the SSAT (the Schools, Students and Teachers network), a national organisation which provides support and training for schools in teaching and learning, curriculum, networking, and leadership development.
The SSAT Educational Outcomes database compares all state-funded schools in England and the highest performing schools in a range of key measures are awarded SSAT Educational Outcomes Awards.
Chris Jones, who has been headteacher since 2014, received the award from Sue Williamson, Chief Executive of SSAT, in London.
The award marks the latest step in a remarkable journey for Bruche Primary, which became part of Warrington Primary Academy Trust in 2016.
Chris Jones said: “We’ve gone from the bottom five per cent of primary schools in England to the top tier in terms of performance in less than five years. It’s a journey that’s been down to a lot of hard work and dedication from our children, staff, parents and governors and the team at Warrington Primary Academy Trust.”
The 250-pupil school was once undersubscribed as parents opted to send their children to other schools in the area but there is now a huge demand for places. This year, for example, saw 130 applications for 30 places in the school’s reception class.
Chris added: “The children’s attainment has been going up and up. For the last three or four years we have been the top five of primary schools in the area and in 2018 we were one of the two highest performing primary schools in the town.”
He puts the dramatic improvement down to high-quality, targeted professional development for all staff. “When the school was struggling we found that staff development and progress had long been neglected and that in turn had a significant impact on learning, so we introduced a tailored package of continuous professional development for all members of staff.”
